Located within the St Vincent’s Clinic, the Sydney Colorectal Clinic employs a holistic, patient-centred approach to managing colorectal conditions with a team of specialists in colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, radiation and medical oncology, general and perioperative medicine, and pelvic health physiotherapy.

Dr Hamish Urquhart

Dr Hamish Urquhart is a specialist colorectal surgeon, with subspecialty training in proctology, complex colorectal cancer, pelvic floor disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. He is the director of the Sydney Colorectal Clinic and is dedicated to the treatment and management of complex colorectal conditions. Dr Urquhart believes in employing a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to Colorectal Surgery, and works closely with other disciplines to coordinate patient care

Dr Urquhart completed his postgraduate medical degree in 2008 from the University of Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (honours). He completed his internship and residency training at the Royal North Shore Hospital and subsequently commenced general surgical training in 2010. Dr Urquhart was awarded his Fellowship (FRACS) in General Surgery by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. In 2016, he began four additional subspeciality colorectal fellowship years focusing on the latest minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, robotic surgery and endoscopy. The last 2 of these fellowship years were with the highly regarded Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) training program where he completed advanced colorectal surgical techniques.

Dr Urquhart is also a qualified biomedical mechanical engineer, graduating with first class honours from the University of Sydney in 2004. He was the 2005 recipient of the Engineers Australia Excellence Award for Innovation, developing several patents for biomedical devices.

Dr Urquhart is the Director of Surgical Training at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. He is also a member of the NSW training board in General Surgery. Dr Urquhart has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented at conferences in Australia, North America, Italy and the United Kingdom on Colorectal Surgery. He also has a passion for teaching and has affiliations with the University of New South Wales and the University of Notre Dame.

Dr Hugh Giddings is a specialist colorectal and general surgeon with subspecialty training in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders, endometriosis surgery, and proctology. He performs open, laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic procedures to treat a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions.

Dr Giddings received his postgraduate medical degree from the University of Sydney in 2010 (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with honours). He went on to complete his general surgical fellowship (FRACS) with the Royal Australia College of Surgeons in 2020, including several years training at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.

Following this Dr Giddings was the Notaras Scholar through the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, with clinical posts at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney where he trained in advanced oncological colorectal surgery, and The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital specialising in minimally invasive techniques. An additional honorary fellowship was undertaken at St Mark’s Hospital in the United Kingdom with a focus on the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, and complex proctology.

Dr Giddings has a strong research background having presented both nationally and internationally, and was awarded the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Mark Killingback research prize in 2025. He recently completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) thesis looking at the trends in surgical workload, outcomes following surgery, and the quality of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) surgical care in Australia. Dr Giddings continues to be involved in collaborative research and is a member of the Australia and New Zealand inflammatory bowel disease consortium, and the scientific, medical, and quality of care advisory committee for Crohn’s Colitis Australia.

A/Prof Megan Barnet

A/Prof Meg Barnet is a Staff Specialist in medical oncology treating gastrointestinal cancers, with special interests in immuno-oncology and genomic sequencing.

After completing her undergraduate degrees in biology and economics at Duke University, A/Prof Barnet returned to Australia and graduated medicine with Honours from the University of Sydney in 2008. She completed her general medical and physician training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse before moving to the St Vincent’s precinct to complete her PhD in immunology at the Garvan Institute.

A/Prof Barnet is a clinician researcher, having been awarded competitive funding including grants from NHMRC (Ideas), Australian Genomic Health Alliance, SVC Foundation, AMR and Tour de Cure to support her work, which focuses on germline determinants of response to immunotherapy. A/Prof Barnet is based in the immunology department at the Garvan Institute, consults from The Kinghorn Cancer Centre and St Vincent’s Clinic, chairs the multi-disciplinary meeting in upper gastrointestinal cancers, supervises within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and is a member of the St Vincent’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). She is a conjoint Associate Professor within UNSW Sydney and Professor within UTS School of Biomedical Engineering, serves as Principal Investigator on numerous GI-focused clinical trials and is an advisor on research committees for Cancer Council NSW, Cancer Institute NSW and the Australian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group.

Dr Subotheni Thavaneswaran

Dr. Subo Thavaneswaran is a medical oncologist specialising in colorectal cancers, neuro-oncology, and precision oncology clinical trials. She has been an active member of the St Vincent’s precinct since 2017 and plays a key role in the colorectal and neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team meetings and molecular tumour boards. Dr. Thavaneswaran also serves as a principal, or sub-investigator for several investigator-initiated clinical trials utilising genomic biomarkers for patient selection, in addition to industry-led trials.

She holds a Visiting Scientist position at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, following the completion of her PhD in cancer genomics, and is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of NSW. Additionally, she is a Senior Research Fellow at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, where she serves as clinical lead for the Cancer Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) program. As a dedicated clinician-researcher, Dr. Thavaneswaran remains committed to translating genomic discoveries into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.

Jeremy completed a Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics prior to graduating from a Bachelor of Medicine with Honours in 2006 from the University of Sydney. He completed his radiation oncology training at Liverpool, Campbelltown, and Canberra Hospitals, followed by a Fellowship at the Royal North Shore Hospital.

Jeremy subsequently took up a staff specialist position at the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Cancer Therapy Centres, prior to joining GenesisCare, Darlinghurst (based at the St Vincent’s Hospital campus) in Sydney, as the Head of the MR-Linac program.

Jeremy’s clinical interests are upper GI, urogenital, lung cancers and stereotactic treatments. He is the most experienced doctor in Australia utilising the MR-Linac technology to treat a range of tumour types.

Jeremy is an active clinician researcher and investigator in international and national clinical trials. The Australian MR-Linac team has published multiple peer reviewed articles about improving treatment efficiency and clinical outcomes in different tumour types. In addition, Jeremy has presented at both international and national conferences on various topics about he and the team’s experience using MR-Linac technology.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, he is active in professional organisations, serving on the TROG Adaptive Radiotherapy subcommittee and the Radiation Oncology Alliance working group on Adaptive Radiation Therapy. Additionally, he is an executive member of the NSW Cancer Institute Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry and the RANZCR Faculty of Radiation Oncology Genito-Urinary Group.

Outside of work, Jeremy enjoys time with his family, which usually revolved around food.

Dr Sandy Sampanio

Dr. Sandy Sampaio is a highly skilled radiation oncologist with a subspecialty focus on gastrointestinal cancer, on brain and spine cancer and palliative radiation therapy. She is dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care, with a strong commitment to improving survivorship and quality of life for her patients. 

Dr. Sampaio obtained her medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa before pursuing physician training in both the United Kingdom and Adelaide, Australia. She completed her specialist training in radiation oncology across several leading cancer centers, including Prince of Wales, Liverpool, Campbelltown, and Wollongong hospitals. Following her training, she undertook a clinical fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Since then, Dr Sampaio has also been appointed the clinical director of Radiation oncology at Macquarie University Hospital.

Dr. Sampaio previously served as a Staff Specialist at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, where she developed her subspecialty interests in upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tumors and central nervous system (CNS) malignancies. She has since transitioned her practice to GenesisCare, where she continues to provide care to patients facing complex oncological conditions.

As an accredited Gamma Knife radiosurgery practitioner, Dr. Sampaio manages complex brain tumors ensuring collaborative and tailored treatment approaches for patients.

Dr Craig Haifer is an experienced gastroenterologist working across St Vincent’s Private and Public Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine though the University of New South Wales.

Dr Haifer is an expert in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, IBS other gastrointestinal issues and takes a comprehensive holistic approach in managing these conditions. He recognises and values the importance of addressing diet and lifestyle to enhance a person’s microbiome and combines this with the most up to date medical advances to ensure his patients get the best outcomes of their conditions.

In addition to traditional gastroscopy and colonoscopy, Dr Haifer incorporates bowel ultrasounds into his treatment regimens which is an entirely non-invasive way to monitor bowel inflammation.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Haifer heads a team of researchers across UNSW and St Vincent’s examining all aspects of the gut microbiome and it’s role in the development of various diseases, including IBD and various types of cancer. His work has defined the landscape of using techniques such as FMT and other pre/probiotics to improve the microbiome and he coordinates several research projects in the space.

Dr Haifer consults at St Vincent’s Clinic as well in Bondi Junction and Wagga Wagga; and performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy through Double Bay Day Hospital, St Vincent’s Private and Public Hospitals and Riverina Day Surgery.

Dr Ian Lockart earned his medical degree at the University of New South Wales, graduating with honours in 2011. He went on to complete his physician and specialist training at Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Sydney. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and has been awarded the Specialty Certificate in Gastroenterology from the Royal Colleges of Physicians in the United Kingdom. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy through the University of New South Wales, and is a Clinical Associate Lecturer, involved in the education and assessment of doctors-in-training. He is accredited for gastroscopy and colonoscopy by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr Lockart is committed to delivering high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and has vast experience managing both simple and complex conditions.

Dr Lockart welcomes all patients, with access to endoscopic facilities at both St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals. He holds a staff specialist appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital, where he oversees general gastroenterology and liver disease clinics. For procedures performed at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Dr Lockart is registered as a ‘no-gap’ provider, meaning there are no additional costs for patients with eligible private health insurance.

Dr Keenan is a specialist general medicine and perioperative physician. As a specialist physician she will assess you as a whole and address how your medical conditions interconnect, ensuring that you get the best outcomes in your care.

Dr Keenan completed her specialist training across New Zealand and Australia and has subspecialty expertise in peri-operative medicine, obstetric medicine, and managing patients with multiple medical conditions with complex needs.

Dr Keenan takes a holistic view and recognises the importance of addressing the medical conditions in parallel with your lifestyle, diet and general health goals.  She is a big advocate of multidisciplinary care and works closely with surgeons, physicians, nursing staff and allied health clinicians and will support your local doctor in your ongoing management.

In addition to her work at St Vincent’s, Dr Keenan is an academic at the University of New South Wales where she teaches the next generation of aspiring doctors.

Angela James is the founder of Sydney Pelvic Clinic and a pioneer in the treatment of patients with pelvic health conditions. With over 20 years of experience in managing complex pelvic issues for both women and men, she uses an evidence-based, person-centred approach to achieve great outcomes for her patients. Angela holds a Specialist title from the Australian College of Physiotherapy as a recognition of her clinical achievements.

Angela is dedicated to helping patients optimise their pelvic health, whether that be reducing pelvic pain and discomfort, improving bladder or bowel function or facilitating a safe and satisfying return to exercise. Angela applies a tailored approach for each patient integrating education, manual therapy, innovative technologies, lifestyle coaching and exercise therapy. Angela strongly believes in empowering her patients, ensuring they have a clear narrative about their condition and a solid plan for long-term results.

Angela is passionate about pelvic physiotherapy and has developed a team of like-minded, highly trained professionals at Sydney Pelvic Clinic. Angela regularly runs professional development courses, both locally and internationally. All her courses are taught with a whole-person, biopsychosocial framework. She is a casual lecturer at the University of Melbourne, teaching the Advanced Clinical Practice subject in the Masters of Pelvic Health program.

Giulia first graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and has gone on to become a titled Continence and Women’s, Men’s and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist after finishing her Masters’ degree at Curtin University and further postgraduate study at the University of South Australia.

She is the  NSW chair of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA)’s Women’s, Men’s and Pelvic Health Committee and is extensively involved in teaching for the APA across two disciplines –pelvic health and gerontology. She is also a guest lecturer in Women’s Health at the University of Technology Sydney, teaching as part of their Master of Physiotherapy degree.

Aman is one of our practice nurses. Our practice nurses monitor patient care throughout the pre-operative and post-operative periods and are available to provide support, advice and reviews. Aman completed a Bachelor of Nursing through the University of Newcastle and has trained in peri-operative practice at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for seven years, specialising in colorectal and general surgery. Throughout this time, she has built a strong professional and interpersonal relationship with Dr Urquhart and Isabelle. Aman is currently studying her Master’s in peri-operative practice and aims to be a surgical assist alongside Dr Urquhart in theatre. 

Originally from the central coast, Aman grew up appreciating a coastal lifestyle. Outside of work, Aman enjoys a very active life that involves endurance running, competes both in triathlons and marathons. Aman also loves spending time with her family and friends, she is a self-confessed fun aunty to her two nephews. She also loves to read, explore new places and new cafes. 

Isabelle Aucoin

Isabelle (Issi) is one of our dedicated practice nurses and also serves as Dr. Urquhart’s practice manager, playing a key role in supporting both patients and the day-to-day coordination of the practice. As our practice nurse, she is closely involved in pre-operative preparation and post-operative care, providing education, wound care, follow-up reviews, and ongoing support to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Issi brings over six years of experience working in operating theatres at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, where she specialised in general and colorectal surgery. This experience has given her a strong clinical foundation and a deep understanding of patient needs across all stages of care. She works closely with Dr. Urquhart, contributing to a highly coordinated and effective model of patient care.

Outside of the practice, Issi enjoys spending time exploring wineries in Orange, NSW, going to the beach with friends, skiing during the winter months, and getting creative in her home pottery studio where she enjoys working with ceramics.

Gila moved to Australia shortly after graduating from Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London with an undergraduate honours degree in Neuroscience and Molecular Pharmacology. She then completed a postgraduate degree in Molecular Genetics at the Garvan Institute in Sydney before commencing her medical degree. Gila graduated from the University of Sydney Medical School in 2009 and completed her specialist Anaesthetic training and cardiothoracic and transplant fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Her special interests are cardiothoracic and transplant anaesthesia, perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography as well as major colorectal surgery. She holds appointments at Vincent’s public and private hospitals, St George public and private hospitals and St Luke’s Private Hospital.

After graduating from the University of Sydney Graduate Medical Program in 2009, Sam completed his specialist anaesthetics training at St Vincent’s in Sydney prior to fellowship at Westmead Hospital. He now enjoys a diverse practice across the St Vincent’s Sydney Hospital campus, Westmead Private and Westmead Public Hospitals. Sam strives for excellence and compassion in anaesthesia care and is an expert in post-operative pain relief and perioperative medicine.

Alex graduated from the University of Sydney Medical Program in 2011. While undertaking anaesthetic training at St Vincent’s Hospital he also attained a post-graduate Masters of Medicine. Alex undertook two anaesthetic fellowships in both general and cardiothoracic anaesthesia with focus on gastrointestinal, ear nose and throat and cardiothoracic surgery. He now practices as a specialist anaesthetist across Sydney where he applies his expertise in a patient centred approach. His clinical interests are peri-operative echocardiography, regional anaesthesia and post operative pain management.

Tiffany graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) medical school before completing anaesthetic training at St Vincent’s Hospital. She has also worked in aeromedical retrieval across the remote communities in the top end of the Northern Territory, and completed her anaesthetic fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). Tiffany has expertise in advanced colorectal surgery and peritonectomy, upper GI surgery, gynaecological surgery and neuroanaesthesia. She currently holds appointments at St Vincent’s public and private hospitals, RPA and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

Tiffany provides her patients with the highest standard of healthcare, incorporating up-to-date advances in anaesthetic techniques with a caring, holistic approach.

Johanna Barrett is an anaesthetist with experience in complex colorectal and gynaecologic surgery. After attaining a postgraduate medical degree at the University of Sydney, she undertook anaesthetic training at St Vincent’s Hospital and completed provisional fellowship at St George Hospital, Kogarah. She now holds consultant appointments at both sites. Johanna combines the principles of patient-centred care with rigorous application of evidence-based anaesthesia to keep you safe and comfortable in your perioperative journey.

She has been managing the Clinic since 2022 when it first started in Paddington and now oversees our Practice at St Vincent’s Clinic Sydney. Kiarni leads our administration team, supports our multiple specialist practitioners and ensures the clinic is operating smoothly behind the scenes. She is passionate about helping patients navigate the healthcare system, which is oftentimes confusing and overwhelming, by providing a friendly, compassionate and positive approach to patient care.

Kiarni hails from the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales and moved to Sydney in 2018 to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Anthropology and English. She lives locally in Bondi and on her days off you can usually find her at the beach with her nose in a good book.

Alice plays an important role in helping patients feel welcomed and supported throughout their care. As the first point of contact for our gastroenterology and allied health team, she assists with appointment scheduling, patient enquiries, and a range of day-to-day administrative tasks to help the clinic run smoothly. Alice is committed to creating a calm and welcoming environment, ensuring patients feel comfortable and supported from the moment they get in touch.

Originally from New Zealand, Alice moved to Australia after an enriching backpacking adventure abroad. She holds a Bachelor of Criminal Justice and a Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce, and enjoys helping others through a warm, people-focused approach. Outside of work, Alice enjoys an active, social lifestyle and loves spending time at the beach. You’ll often find her in the ocean, trying a new restaurant, or catching up with friends.

Nimeesha Bates

As a Medical Receptionist, Nimeesha plays an integral role in ensuring patients receive seamless and compassionate care. Likely to be the first point of contact when you call, Nimeesha manages various administrative tasks including scheduling appointments, handling patient enquiries and supporting daily operations. Nimeesha is committed to creating a calm and welcoming environment, and ensures patients feel supported from the moment they contact the clinic.

Nimeesha previously completed a Bachelor of Business and has since returned to university to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing, combining her strong organisational skills with a genuine passion for healthcare. She is dedicated to supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey and takes pride in creating a welcoming, compassionate, and professional experience for everyone who visits the clinic. 

Outside of work and study, Nimeesha enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends and maintaining an active lifestyle through running, yoga, and regular gym sessions. She also loves travelling and discovering new places” whenever she has the opportunity.

Alexia

Alexia

As a Medical Receptionist, Alexia plays a key role in supporting both the oncology and surgical teams within the practice. She works closely with our oncology team, Vita Nova Consulting and one of our colorectal surgeons, Dr Hugh Giddings, helping to coordinate patient care and ensure a seamless, supportive experience across all specialties. Alexia is known for her compassionate and understanding nature and is committed to going above and beyond to support patients.

Outside of work, Alexia enjoys travelling, having lived overseas for four years, as well as going to the gym, spending time at the beach, walking her dog Charlie, and making memories with her friends and family.

Elka

Elka

Elka brings warmth, professionalism, and a caring nature to her role as Practice Coordinator. With a Diploma of Nursing, she understands the importance of providing a positive experience for every patient and takes pride in creating a calm, welcoming environment.

Outside of work, she enjoys making the most of the outdoors, whether that’s exploring new hiking trails, spending time by the water, travelling to new places, or discovering great food and live music along the way. Her approachable personality and genuine compassion help patients feel comfortable and supported from their very first interaction. Having grown up on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, Elka has a deep appreciation for the outdoors and coastal lifestyle, which continues to inspire her love of adventure, wellbeing, and meaningful connections.
